Wandile Duba scored two goals as Kaizer Chiefs came from behind to claim a famous 2-1 win over Stellenbosch FC at the FNB Stadium in Soweto, Johannesburg on Wednesday night.
A day after the club celebrated their 55th anniversary, they claimed a very important three points as they moved up to fifth in the Betway Premiership.
Unlike in recent weeks, Chiefs made a fast start as they looked to take the game to their opponents, who would have been disappointed with the first half of their league campaign.
Playing in an advanced position, Bradley Cross had a golden opportunity to put Chiefs ahead with just five minutes on the board, but after being played through by Mduduzi Tshabalala, he blazed his effort over the bar.
Chiefs’ old habits came back to bite them when they conceded in the 20th minute. Devin Titus beat a number of players down the right hand side, and teed the ball up beautifully for Khomotjo Lekoloane, who was left with a simple finish with Bruce Bvuma all at sea.
Stellenbosch’s lead lasted all of eight minutes, though, as Nasreddine Nabi’s men pulled themselves back level from a corner kick when Wandile Duba headed the ball past Sage Stephens in the 28th minute to make it 1-1.
Neither side could find the goal to go ahead before the break.
The game seemed to open up in the second half and both sides could have taken the lead from numerous chances created.
However, it was Nabi’s men who went ahead with 13 minutes played when teenager Mfundo Vilakazi found Duba with a though pass. Duba made no mistake and fired the ball behind Stephens to put Chiefs 2-1 in front with his second of the game.
Duba, unfortunately, couldn’t complete his hat-trick as he was withdrawn with an injury for Ranga Chivaviro as the game reached its climax.
Muhsin Ertugral makes it two in two against Soweto giants
Over in the Mother City, Cape Town City made it two wins in a row against Soweto teams when they beat Orlando Pirates 1-0.
On the weekend, the Citizens began Muhsin Etrugral’s tenure with a 1-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs. On Wednesday, they followed that up with another 1-0 triumph against the mighty Sea Robbers, who missed an opportunity to go back to the top of the league.
Patrick Maswanganyi could have put Pirates in front from the spot in the 71st minute, but he failed to hit the target with his penalty. Three minutes later, Darwin Gonzalez found the back of the net for the home side.
City were able to hold on to their advantage and walked away from the Cape Town Stadium with all three points, and moved up to sixth in the league after picking up a maximum six points from their last two games.
And in Durban, goals at the end of each half saw Sekhukhune United earn a 2-0 win over AmaZulu at the King Zwelithini Stadium. Sekhukhune are now up to fourth in the league, while AmaZulu are all the way down in 12th.
