Richards Bay FC have parted ways with head coach Vusimuzi “Kanu” Vilakazi, despite the coach managing to help the club avoid relegation from the Betway Premiership last season.

After safely navigating the KwaZulu-based side out of troubled waters, Vilakazi signed a one year-contract extension with the club and was expected to lead them heading into the new season.

However, speaking to Andile Ncube on Metro FM this week, Vilakazi confirmed his departure from the Natal Rich Boys, saying he refused to sign a new amended contract from the club which included a performance clause.

"I think three or four days ago, there was another contract that the club said I must sign and when I looked at the contract, it was the same contract that I had signed but it had been amended with a performance clause being introduced, and it was also a one year but this one had an option.

"The bottom line is that that was another contract and I refused to sign that contract because initially, we had a contract that was signed between the two of us," Vilakazi said.

Vilakazi also added the performance clause which required him to collect at least eight points from every five games played was unrealistic given the number of new arrivals at the club.

Vilakazi's departure from Richards Bay also comes just a month after Phakwe Gas CEO Thabiso Tenyane, the club's new sponsors, indicated that there would be massive changes within the coaching staff at the club.

"I can tell you Richards Bay is going to beat the Gauteng teams because we are going to make sure. The only surprise that is coming is going to be that of the coach before the season starts," said Tenyane.

Meanwhile, former AmaZulu and Moroka Swallows coach Brandon Truter is believed to be the front-runner in landing the newly vacant post at the KwaZulu-Natal outfit.
