Marumo Gallants’ Nigerian goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi says he wants to see more of his countrymen playing in the Betway Premiership.

Akpeyi, who transfered to the Limpopo-based outfit at the end of last season after three seasons with Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs, said playing in the PSL gave footballers more exposure than in the Nigerian Professional Football League.

“To be quite honest with you, Nigerians have to consider this league because without disrespect, with all humility, there’s no way you can compare the Nigerian league and the South African league,” Akpeyi was quoted by FARPost on Wednesday.

“We have a lot of good players in Nigeria, a lot of good talent in Nigeria but they need this kind of exposure for their talent to be seen around the world,” the Nigeria international added.

“It’s not that they cannot be seen in the Nigerian league as well. But the PSL league, like I said initially, is one of the top six leagues in Africa.

“It’s one of the best in the world as well, it’s recognised. With all the talent that we have in Nigeria, if you can find the way in the PSL league, trust me it’s easy to showcase yourself in the world.”

The other Nigerians plying their trade in the Betway Premiership are AmaZulu’s Etiosa Ighodaro, Olisa Ndah of Orlando Pirates, Stanley Nwabali from Chippa United, and the Stellenbosch FC duo of Ibraheem Jabaar and Enyinnaya Kazie Godswill.

And in the past, stars such as Raphael Chukwu, Williams Okpara, Greg Etafia, Onyekachi Okwonkwo and Muisi Ajao made a name for themselves in South Africa’s domestic competition.
