Ahead of the London derby between Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal on Wednesday evening, Premier League legend Sol Campbell was the star of a new cheeky advert about changing allegiances.
Campbell of course spent nine years at Spurs at the start of his professional career before making a controversial switch to London rivals Arsenal.
The 50-year-old made 255 appearances for Spurs and 135 for Arsenal during his peak years.
With Arsenal the vastly more successful of the two London clubs, Campbell takes a number of jabs at Spurs during the ad for the new Google Pixel phone.
Starting off the ad, Campbell is seen preparing a meal in a kitchen in a white polar neck jersey.
He starts off by saying: “It’s that time of year again when people start to wonder if the grass might be greener …
Before he is seen walking along a hallway displaying Arsenal memorabilia while he removes his white jersey to reveal another identical polar neck jersey, but in red.
He continues: “Whether they should switch sides and change allegiances.
The former centre back then nonchalantly begins dusting a trophy before saying: “Take it from me, big moves pay off.”
Next in a comically obvious metaphor, Campbell moves a vase of Lilly Whites (Tottenham’s nickname) flowers away from the viewer.
Arsenal are currently in third place on the Premier League table, and are seen as the biggest challengers to table-toppers Liverpool. Arsenal are seven points adrift of The Reds after 20 matches.
Spurs, meanwhile, are languishing in 13th spot with 21 points from 20 matches in a season that has not gone according to plan.
In the final scene, Campbell says: “You’re just switching to something much, much better.”
The ad ends with Campbell asking his phone, what were we just talking about? The AI voice responds with a perfectly pointed: “We were just talking about separating delicate whites from strong colours like red in your wash cycle.”
