Former Reds striker Emile Heskey has implored Liverpool to offer club legend Mohamed Salah a new contract.

Salah has made headlines over the last couple months as the 32-year-old nears the end of his contract with Premier League log leaders Liverpool.

The Egyptian speedster has 232 goals for Liverpool since he joined the club in 2017, and ranks fourth in the all-time scoring charts for his side.

Recently, and uncharacteristically, Salah has hinted at his frustration over the fact that Liverpool have not yet made an offer to keep him at the club beyond the new season.

Sign him, sign him now

Heskey who made 150 appearances for Liverpool between 2000 and 2004, believes a new contract could be close to being finalised for Salah.

“We don’t know the full story with Mo Salah, so we can only go with what’s been said, but I’d be very surprised if Liverpool hadn’t started some sort of negotiations,” Heskey told SportsBoom.com

“Maybe not speaking to him, firstly, but at least negotiations with his representatives.

“But equally they [Liverpool] would have to be very naïve if they hadn’t started negotiations.”

Heskey pointed to the astounding consistency of Salah while at Liverpool which has seen the player score every 1.6 games.

“He’s one of the club’s main players. You’re talking about someone who makes 30 goal contributions every season.

“How much would that cost to replace? A huge amount of money.”

At Salah’s level, Heskey said there were not many equals.

“And, to be honest, is there a replacement for Salah? I’m not really sure there is, he’s that good of a player.”
