As Bongani Zungu looks for a new club, and has been linked with a move to Kaizer Chiefs, Wydad AC coach Rulani Mokwena says the player would be a welcome addition to his new Moroccan club.

On Tuesday it was reported that Kaizer Chiefs are close to bagging the services of the free agent after he was let go by DStv Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns at the end of last season.

The 31-year-old midfielder this week also posted a picture from Istanbul, Turkey, on social media.

Chiefs are currently on a pre-season tour in Turkey, and Zungu revealing he is also there lends credence to speculation that he may be joining the Soweto Giants.

‘It’s easier when you know the coach’

The former Sundowns coach Mokwena told Thabiso Mosia on Game On: "I love Bongs (Bongani Zungu), Bongs knows me, I know him. It's easier when you know the coach, the player knows you.

"There is a possibility of (Zungu joining Wydad AC). He knows, if he doesn’t find anything, he knows my number and he can always contact me.

"It’s not to say the door is open, the door is closed. But he is very special to me.”

Though the former Bafana Bafana player is no youngster anymore, Zungu could be a good addition to either club. He began his professional career at University of Pretoria (Tuks) back in 2012. Having excelled in the 25 matches he played that season for Tuks which yielded seven goals, he was quickly snapped up by Sundowns the next year.

After three seasons with Sundowns, Zungu had racked up 58 appearances. Moves to Vtioria Guimaraes (Portugal), Amiens (France) and Rangers (Scotland) would follow before he returned to Sundowns in 2022.
