Johannesburg – In an interesting twist of events, Ajax Amsterdam have confirmed that Thulani Serero is, in fact, injured.

Serero was kicked out of the Bafana Bafana camp last week after complaining that he didn’t want to risk injury in the World Cup qualifier against Botswana.

Igesund said the team doctor had evaluated Serero, who complained of a tight groin muscle, and found him to be in good shape for the match.

But, according to the Bafana Bafana coaching staff, Serero wanted to protect himself ahead of a big club match, thought to be an upcoming Champions League fixture against Barcelona.

On Wednesday, Ajax Amsterdam reported on their website that Serero had had an MRI scan on his return from South Africa and was found to have strained an abdominal muscle.

His participation in this weekend’s match against PEC Zwolle is in doubt.

“The MRI scan (found an injury to) his abdominal oblique forward. This may explain the groin injury he suffered ... as no further damage was found,” the club said on their website.

Meanwhile, Igesund has left the door open for Serero return to the Bafana side, saying all the player has to do is admit his mistake and they could move on.

Igesund – and the fans around the country – will be watching this weekend with keen interest. – IOL
