Johannesburg – Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs captain Itumeleng Khune appeared briefly in the Lyttelton Magistrate Court on Tuesday on a charge of reckless and negligent driving.
Khune was arrested on Friday night for driving 173km/h in a 120km/h zone.
The goalkeeper was arrested and later released on R1 500 bail.
Khune’s case was postponed on Tuesday and he is expected to appear in court again on March 6 after the matter was referred for further investigation.
The skipper read out a statement on the steps outside the court, expressing remorse for actions.
“I’m (taking) this opportunity to make a short statement. The matter is before a court of law, I respect that process wholeheartedly. As far as this incident is concerned, I’m extremely remorseful of my actions,” Khune said.
“I have made a mistake and I will learn from it. As Bafana Bafana captain, I appreciate my position as a role model to South Africa, especially the younger generation.
"I humbly apologise for this indiscretion. I will ensure that I learn from this mistake and become a better person, and role model. As Tata Madiba said, ‘Do not judge me by my success, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up,’” Khune said in closing. – IOL
