Team SA’s Alwande Sikhosana advanced to the next round of the men’s wheelchair tennis singles at the Paris Paralympics on Friday after winning his match against Brazil’s Gustavo Silva 6-4, 7-5.

The weather had a big say on the day, and play was halted with Sikhosana trailing his rival 2-1. However, after play resumed, the South African found his second wind, and was able to prevail to advance to the second round.

In the men’ T12 100m, Jaco Smit managed to finish second in his heat in a time of 11.12sec, but it was not good enough to see him reach the final.

And in the women’s individual boccia, Portugal’s Ana Costa overcame Team SA’s Elanza Jordaan 2-1. South Africa’s Karabo Morapedi was due on the boccia court late on Friday night.

Sheryl James, competing in the women’s T37 200m final could only finish in seventh place in a time of 29.08sec in a brave race.

In the men’s 100m backstroke S13 final, Nathan Hendricks finished seventh in a time of 1:03.43.
