Pretoria - Malawian singer Onesimus Muzik has once again created an extraordinary Afrobeat jam.

Onesimus has had large success in Malawi and throughout Africa, where he has been dubbed “Prince Of Malawi”.

He has been widely popularised as a pop singer, and his new venture into Afrobeat has been well received by his followers.

Onesimus started singing at the age of 13. He fell in love with the craft and he toured Malawi performing in concerts and small shows.

He is also a seasoned dancer who was part of a dance group that won The Sprite Dance Competition in 2006.

Onesimus has had many successful collaborations with well-known artists like Vusi Nova, Tekno and Fredokiss.

In a clear indication that this superstar has made the right move by trying his hand at secular music, two weeks after the release of Shuga, YouTube streams have climbed to over 10 000.

The Malawian star has a number of accolades under his belt.

He has walked away with awards such as Best Male Artist, which he took in 2019 in Nigeria at the Afrima Awards.

Known for his pan-African reach, Onesimus has also been awarded Best Artist Of the Year at the Zambian Zikomo Awards.

Shuga narrates a twisted love story where Onesimus finds himself at the mercy of his obsession with the object of desire.

Willing to do anything for this love, he follows along with an infectious sound as he professes his intentions.

Told with a light-hearted melody, with percussion, light keys and a beat from the heart of tropical music, Onesimus likens the relationship with her to that of “Shuga”.

As the song progresses, the beat similarly strengthens. With an inclination of staccato rhythmic guitar, the love story captures the writer’s desire to protect and serve as a shield to those whom he loves.

“In many ways I am rewriting history in my works and the dominant sense of self-awareness that informs most African art practices,” said Onesimus.

He takes a listener on a journey through his heart and what he feels when he is fully immersed and engaged in the scent that is love.

The song is available on digital music platforms worldwide.
