The tributes that have been shared to mark the recent passing of Tony Howard, underline my former colleague’s importance and standing both as newspaper man, and as a wonderfully warm human being, for whom I had the utmost admiration.

Tony was an immensely respected newspaper man, ink flowed in his veins, and I have fond memories of him. He was with Independent Media for 45 years, working his way up through nearly every facet of the company, gaining unparalleled insights and skill, as well as regard from everyone whose path he crossed. When he retired in December 2015, he was my deputy, a role he had assumed for two years after we acquired Independent Media in 2013.

As he had done with other people entering this competitive industry, he willingly shared his knowledge and vast experience with me, as we transitioned Independent Media from its legacy business into the new era of a democratically represented readership. He was a true inspiration.

His contribution to the industry will live on in the memories and lived experience of many of us who had the privilege of working with him. It is incumbent on us now to ensure that his legacy continues.

To his family, my heartfelt condolences.

Tony will be sorely missed, may his soul rest in peace but his legacy lives on.
