Two people were killed in a horror crash on the N3 near Pietermaritzburg on Thursday night.
According to ALS Paramedics, the accident took place on N3 North Bound near the Market Road offramp just after 10 pm.
Spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said initial reports were that multiple trucks, buses, and cars were involved.
"Paramedics arrived on the scene to find carnage as they found that two trucks and a fully laden bus had been involved in a rear-end collision on the national highway.
"On impact, the vehicles caught alight. The Pietermaritzburg Fire Department worked to fight the blaze while paramedics triaged and treated multiple casualties."
He said the bus driver and truck driver passed away due to the severity of their injuries.
"Approximately 20 patients were treated on scene for various injuries by multiple ambulances before they were transported to various Pietermaritzburg Hospitals for the further care they required."
He said the roadway was closed.
"At this stage the events leading up to the crash are unknown however all necessary authorities were in attendance and will be investigating further."
