Kenny Kunene is offering a reward of R100,000 for information regarding Monday night's shooting that claimed the lives of two Rea Vaya bus drivers.
Kunene, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Transport at the City of Johannesburg, said he would like to do his bit and believed that this will help with the investigation.
"I therefore commit R100,000 to anyone who will assist the police in apprehending these barbarians. I will not wait for the case to be finalised. As long as the police have confirmed that they have evidence linking those who have been arrested to this act, I will make the R100,000 available to whoever assists the police," he said, adding that the monies will come from his pockets and not the City's coffers.
It is alleged that on Monday, two drivers were ambushed in separate incidents and fatally wounded.
"At one location, one of the drivers had stopped at a traffic light on Wildchestnut Street n Protea, when he was shot dead.
"The second incident unfolded at Tshithuthune Street in Mapetla where the driver was shot. He lost control of the bus and later succumbed to his injuries," Kunene said.
The murders have led to the suspension of services until further notice, while police investigate.
Kunene said it was clear that the murders appeared to be well-orchestrated.
"It is not just the killing of innocent drivers doing their jobs; it is a declaration of war on the residents of Soweto and the government," he said.
He said an in-depth security assessment is being carried out to strengthen security at BRT stations and on BRT feeder routes.
"Resources will be deployed to escort and protect drivers and buses as a proactive intervention to circumvent possible future attacks," Kunene said.
