Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Dean Macpherson, has welcomed the completion of The Dome, a temporary structure now housing sittings of the National Assembly.

The structure, previously used during the funeral of former President Nelson Mandela, will temporarily serve as the venue for parliamentary sittings until the reconstruction of the National Assembly chambers is finalised.

Macpherson highlighted the importance of the project in saving taxpayers’ money.

"As the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure, we have successfully repurposed this structure, which had remained idle for many years, to help Parliament save millions in costs while the reconstruction of the National Assembly chambers continues," he said.

The Dome has undergone significant upgrades, including the addition of a new roof sail and structural reinforcements, ensuring it can host sittings in all weather conditions. Additionally, the public will now be able to attend parliamentary sittings in person for the first time in many years.

Public Works spokesperson James de Villers emphasised the collaborative effort behind the project, noting that the team worked tirelessly to meet tight deadlines.

"The structure now provides a functional and reliable solution, ensuring that Parliament can continue its work uninterrupted," said De Villers.

Macpherson also praised the leadership of director-general Sifiso Mdakane, who personally oversaw the project’s implementation.

"The Director-General and his team worked tirelessly, even through the December holiday period, to ensure that the project was completed on time for Parliamentary sittings. We extend our sincere thanks to them for their dedication," he said.

Looking ahead, the Minister expressed confidence in the continued success of The Dome, ensuring National Assembly sittings will proceed without interruption.

"We look forward to continuing our collaboration with Parliament to ensure it can effectively serve the people of South Africa," Macpherson said.

He also noted that the project demonstrated the Department's ability to act quickly and effectively, and expressed eagerness to continue with upcoming construction projects in the country.
