Where does freedom of speech turn to hate speech? How does hate speech affect human rights? If you have the know how and writing skills to match it, you can secure some cold hard cash.

The Kemper Human Rights Education Foundation (KHREF), a non-profit organisation that attempts to urge students to search for the rules and enforcement methods that will ensure everyone’s human rights are fulfilled has a competition for high school pupils.

Winners will receive prizes up to $4,000 (about R69,905), $2,000 (around R34,943), and $1,000 (around R17,482).

In the essay, applicants have to answer: “The secretary-general of the United Nations, has highlighted hate speech as a significant danger to human rights.

“Do you agree, and if so, how should governments deal with this threat? If you disagree, explain why. Conversely, if you agree, elaborate on your answer.”

The essays will be judged according to how clearly and well applicants answer the question posed and the extent to which they are supported by research.

– The should be written in English.

– Be 2,500 words or less (excluding footnotes and bibliography) in length.

The competition is due on or before December 10, 2024. The winners will be announced and awarded in January 2025.
