A 33-year-old man was arrested in connection with attempted murder and firearm-related charges following a tactical police operation in Brits.

The North West police spokesperson, Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said the arrest took place on January 31, after the Brits Trio Task Team and Bojanala Crime Intelligence officers tracked the suspect down.

He had been under investigation for an incident late last month in Damonsville, outside Brits, where he allegedly attempted to kill someone and pointed a firearm at them.

"Consequent to gathering information and keeping observation, the suspect was arrested during a tactical operation. During the arrest, the suspect was found in possession of a licensed firearm, a magazine and 16 rounds of ammunition that were seized for investigation purposes," said Mokgwabone.

Acting provincial commissioner, Major General Patrick Asaneng, confirmed that the team had been assigned to locate the suspect on Wednesday, January 29. Officers gathered intelligence, kept him under observation, and moved in at the right moment to make the arrest.

The suspect appeared in the Brits Magistrate's Court on Monday, on face attempted murder and firearm charges.

Asaneng praised the officers for their quick action, saying such arrests are crucial in tackling violent crime in the province.
