Gender-based violence (GBV) is a horrific reality in the lives of South Africans. One in three women experience this harrowing fact. Communities have taken to handling such matters themselves despite the South African Police Service (SAPS) urging citizens to leave the law to the professionals.
In a disturbing video posted on social media, a woman is seen hitting a man with a white object along with others. The clip's caption alleges that the community stepped in to help the woman who is an alleged victim of the man.
"This man is a woman abuser; he used to beat his wife daily, even in the streets; the community took over and gave the woman a chance to beat him, the community taught him a lesson," it read.
Seemingly out to get vengeance and justice, the man is repeatedly beaten as passerby witness the crime. "Guys no. This is not right. It is not the way to do things," one of the onlookers is heard saying in the background.
One of the men can be seen encouraging the woman to continue beat him.
The SAPS' Major General Patrick Asaneng, warned communities to refrain from mob justice. This came after the body of a 29-year-old Lemogang Innocent Tiro was discovered on Tuesday evening, at Gamoetsana section in Dinokana village, Lehurutshe, close to Zeerust.
Police spokesperson, Captain Mpho Manyoba said police were summoned to the location at approximately 6pm and discovered Tiro's partially burned body near his residence.
"According to unconfirmed reports, community members accused the man of being responsible for killing a 37-year-old woman on Sunday, February 2, in Gamokgatlhe section, Dinokana village. Sadly, the woman died later at a hospital in Lehurutshe. No one has been arrested and investigations into the matter are continuing," said Manyoba.
