With the first shipment, following the 2024 launch, having sold out, Dayun’s local importer has confirmed that another shipment of South Africa’s cheapest electric vehicle (EV) is on the way.
Priced at R399,900 in Standard guise and R449,900 as a “VIP” model, the Dayun Yuehu S5 undercuts the R539,900 BYD Dolphin and R686,950 GWM Ora 03 by a significant margin.
It is a diminutive city car, however, with its 3,695mm length making it among the smallest cars on the market. Dayun has made some concessions to adapt it for local conditions though.
For instance, the top speed, which was previously listed at 100km/h, has been raised to 115km/h for the local market, making it better equipped for short highway runs, although owners are still advised to stay out of the fast lane.
With the first shipment having been sold primarily to businesses and large sales fleets, a second batch is on the way to South Africa, but the importer, Enviro Automotive, says this batch is nearly sold out.
The Yuehu S5, an import from China, is fitted with a 31.7 kWh ternary lithium-ion battery that offers a claimed range of 330km between charges. It also supports Level 2 AC and DC charging, with a 220V recharge taking four hours and a DC fast charge allowing a 20% to 80% charge in less than one hour, the importer claims.
Features in the standard model include an 8.0-inch infotainment screen, 7.0-inch LCD driver information display, reverse camera, keyless start, climate control, electrically adjustable front seats, electric windows and cruise control.
The S5 VIP model gains ultrasonic radars at the front and rear, enabling additional driver assist features, and the flagship also comes with a SmartLink APP that enables remote locking, unlocking, starting and aircon activation via your phone.
"While compared to larger, pricier electric SUVs, the affordable Yuehu S5 confidently carves its niche. It may not compete with luxury EVs offering bigger electric motors or extended ranges, but it remains a practical and budget-friendly option for South Africans seeking a modern, feature-packed urban EV without breaking the bank," Gideon Wolvaardt, Managing Director of Enviro Automotive.
The vehicle is sold with a three-year or 60,000km warranty and service plan, while the battery is separately covered for five-year or 120,000km.
