S-Class Coupé to get drop-top sibling

Imagine this as a convertible with a fabric roof and a sledgehammer AMG V12 kicking out close to 500kW. Remember to breathe.

Not only has the utterly gorgeous Concept S-Class Coupé - which caused a well-deserved stir at the recent Frankfurt motor show - been green-lighted for production in early 2014 (OK, that's not news, it would have been more surprising if it hadn't been) but Mercedes-Benz product development boss Thomas Weber has now also told Automotive News there is going to be a convertible version with a fabric roof.

Expect to see it in showrooms with three-pointed logos in the first quarter of 2015.

It'll be the first topless S-Class since the W111 Cabriolet went out of production in 1971 and will mark the re-entry of yet another prestige maker into that quintessentially American niche, the full-sized four-seater convertible.

CLOSE TO 500KW

And, at just more than five metres in length, and 60mm wider than the new S-Class sedan, full-sized is not an idle description.

The Concept Coupé has a five-litre V8 biturbo V8 rated at 339kW and 700Nm but there will also be an S63 production version with a 5.5-litre twin-turbo AMG V8 and an S 65 loaded for bear with a tweaked version of the AMG V12 kicking out close to 500kW - and by inference, the convertible will be offered with the same engine range.

Now that'll really blow your hair back.
