Hyundai to build hydrogen-powered SUV

Paris Motor Show - Among the many proposed solutions for future car propulsions is hydrogen fuel cells, and Hyundai is now stepping into this arena with its ix35 Fuel Cell vehicle.

The company has announced that this hydrogen-powered ix35 will begin series production and become available for lease to members of the public in certain countries by the end of this year.

The initial volumes will modest though, with only 1000 units planned for the next two years, but Hyundai is hoping to ramp up to limited mass production beyond 2015 - with an eventual goal of 10 000 vehicles.

Powered by hydrogen, the only thing this vehicle emits is pure water vapour. To achieve this kind of propulsion, a fuel cell stack converts the hydrogen into electricity, which then charges the Lithium Polymer battery that ultimately runs the electric motor.

Think of it as your own personal on-board power station.

The ix35 Fuel Cell is no slowpoke either - Hyundai claiming that it can jog from 0-100km/h in 12.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 160km/h. It's also reportedly capable of covering 588km between refuels.

But therein lies this car's biggest stumbling block, for now - the lack of refuelling infrastructure for hydrogen vehicles.

Despite this, Hyundai believes this vehicle (along with other hydrogen-powered counterparts like the Honda FCX Clarity) will become a driving force for change.

Several governments, particularly in Europe, are committed to building a bigger hydrogen infrastructure and many European cities already have hydrogen stations.

Another problem - besides the safety concerns surrounding such an explosive substance - is the manufacturing costs.

Trade media sources have reported that the initial price will be around $88 000 (R723 360). Hyundai, and other companies keen on this technology, will have to find ways of reducing the exorbitant costs incurred by fuel cell technology.

Whether mass production alone would achieve this remains to be seen.
