When Hyundai pulled the covers off its new i40 wagon at the Geneva show earlier this year, it also promised that a sedan version was in the pipeline and this official sketch reveals how that four-door is going to look.

The i40 is basically what Hyundai will be offering the European market instead of the Sonata and since the latter is already sold in South Africa, there's no point in looking forward to the new saloon you see here.

As with the estate, the i40 saloon was penned at Hyundai's German design studio to pander exclusively to European tastes, while also evolving the brand's 'fluidic sculpture' styling theme.

Hyundai's European design chief, Thomas Bürkle, explains: "We wanted to move away from the typical three-box saloon. By sculpting a low, elongated roof line, we've given the i40 saloon a striking coupe-like silhouette."

The new four-door also promises a cosy and spacious cabin, with a 2.77-metre wheelbase allowing for class-leading front head, shoulder and legroom.

On the engine front, buyers can expect to choose from an extremely frugal 1.7-litre turbodiesel that emits just 113g/km of CO2 and the latest version of Hyundai's 2-litre petrol engine.

The i40 saloon will be unveiled in the flesh at the Barcelona Motor Show next Thursday, 12 May.
