DURBAN: Three pedestrians died after they were allegedly hit by a car in Tottenham Road, in Parkgate near Verulam, on Saturday night.
Two people died on impact and another died in hospital, due to the severity of the injuries.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said cases of culpable homicide were being investigated by Verulam SAPS.
“It is alleged that on Saturday night, at 10pm at Tottenham Road, in Parkgate, three males – aged 25 and 26 – died after they were knocked by a vehicle,” said Gwala.
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) spokesperson Prem Balram said they received calls from the residents in the area, requesting assistance for the injured.
He said their officers and medics were dispatched to the scene and, on arrival, found an angry mob assaulting the driver of the car involved in the accident.
Police confirmed that the driver had been assaulted.
On Sunday afternoon, just after 4pm, ALS Paramedics and KZN VIP Medical attended to a multi-vehicle collision, involving a truck and several cars on the M7 and N2 interchange, coming from Bellville towards the Bluff.
Paramedic Garrith Jamieson said, on arrival, KZN VIP Medical Paramedics were faced with utter carnage and more assistance was requested.
“One person, a male, believed to be in his twenties, was found entrapped in the wreckage and, unfortunately, he had sustained major injuries. There was nothing more paramedics could do for him and he was declared dead on the scene,” he said.
“A further three people had sustained minor to moderate injuries and were stabilised on the scene before being taken to a hospital,” added Jamieson.
On Saturday night, IPSS Medical Rescue attended to a multi-vehicle collision on the N2, in Zinkwazi, which resulted in one death.
IPSS spokesperson Paul Herbst said when paramedics arrived on the scene, it was chaotic.
“Advanced life support paramedics declared one person dead, while they worked to stabilise a further two patients.
“Reports from scene indicate that a vehicle had allegedly broken down and was being pushed to safety, when it was rear-ended. Following the rear-ending, the vehicles allegedly crossed lanes into oncoming traffic, resulting in further collisions,” he said.
Earlier on Saturday afternoon, IPSS arrived at the scene of an overturned bakkie, in Mandeni, which caused five occupants to be ejected from the vehicle.
Herbst said one patient was in a critical condition, while the others sustained moderate injuries.
“Paramedics worked to stabilise patients on scene before transporting them to medical facilities. Unfortunately, one patient succumbed to their injuries after arriving at hospital,” said Herbst.
That morning, ALS Paramedics and KZN VIP Medical said eight people were injured in a single vehicle accident, on the N3 East bound, at the M7 offramp, just after 6.30am.
“It is believed that a light delivery vehicle, carrying eight passengers, had lost control and overturned multiple times, ejecting all of the passengers onto the roadside.
The injured passengers were taken to hospitals.
On Friday afternoon, Jamieson said several people were injured in a accident involving a bus and multiple vehicles, on Rick Turner Road, near the Howard College, just after 5pm.
“Seven people had sustained minor to moderate injuries. Once stabilised, the injured people were transported to a nearby Durban hospital,” he said.
