DURBAN - Many residents in the province’s capital city questioned the return of Mzimkhulu Thebolla as mayor and Eunice Majola as Speaker following the Msunduzi Municipality’s inaugural council sitting at the Royal Showgrounds on Monday.

But IFP caucus leader in the Msunduzi Municipality, Thinasonke Ntombela, says Pietermaritzburg residents should do some introspection before complaining about the poor service delivery as they were the ones that returned the ANC to power.

Many locals took to social media questioning whether there would be any improvement in service delivery as the people that had failed before had been retained at the helm of the municipality.

Issues of dirty streets and lack of refuse collection have been one of Pietermaritzburg’s main problems earning the city the dubious tag of “Capital of Filth”.

“We are an absolute joke, I tell you, ANC are pissing on us reminding use what idiots we really are. How can we re-elect this guy?” said one resident on social media.

Another local questioned the average age of the leaders at city hall, calling for younger people to be elected to positions.

Ntombela said the residents had been given a chance to make a choice and had chosen the ANC to lead in the city.

“The residents shot themselves in the foot when they voted for the ANC, so any complaints over service delivery are nothing more than a self-inflicted wound, and people must live their choices,” said Ntombela.

Msunduzi municipality, which also has a massive debt problem, remains under administration following the decision to intervene from the provincial government in April 2019.
