I don’t know many people who love laundry day, but unfortunately, it’s one of those chores that must be done.
Having to deal with a mountain of clothes can put one off completely.
However, you would be happy to know that there are clothing items that don’t need to be dumped into the laundry basket after each wear.
Here’s a breakdown of how often you really need to do laundry, depending on what you're wearing.
Wash after each wear
These pieces of clothing are the hardest workers in your wardrobe. They come in direct contact with all sorts of things like sweat, bacteria, and the occasional spill and smudges.
Undies, socks, and vests: This is a no-brainer! There’s no way you can skip washing these items. They come into direct contact with sweat and bacteria.
Workout clothes: You’re sweaty and possibly stinky after an intense workout therefore it only makes sense that your activewear needs to be washed after you’ve worn it.
Swimsuits: Chlorine and salt water can ruin your swimsuits. Rinse them thoroughly after every swim, and wash them in cold water to keep the elastic intact.
Wash weekly
Some of your clothes can take a little more abuse. These items might not need to be washed after every wear but of course, they need to be washed at some point.
Shirts and blouses: You can probably wear these once or twice times before you need to drop them into the laundry basket.
If they start to look or smell funky, it’s time to toss them in.
Pants and skirts: These items are usually good for two to three wears before they start looking like they’ve been through the most.
Of course, if you’ve spilt something on them then they will need to be washed.
Jeans: Jeans are made of tough stuff. You can typically wear them four to five times before they start to show any real signs of dirt or odour. However, you will have to wash them sooner if you’ve messed on them or they start to get a bit smelly.
Sweaters: Sweaters don’t need to be washed after every wear. As long as you’re wearing something underneath them, you can usually go four to six wears.
Less frequent
These pieces of clothing are basically the items in your wardrobe you don’t have to see your laundry basket too often.
They don't need constant attention, and when they do, it’s usually a much more delicate operation.
Coats and jackets: If your coat isn’t stained or covered in food, you can typically wear it several times before needing to clean it.
Dry cleaning might be a better option depending on the fabric.
Dresses: Formal dresses should absolutely get a dry cleaning after each wear.
However, more casual dresses can usually go a few wears before they need to be washed. Unless of course, they are obviously dirty.
Pyjamas: Pyjamas are comfy and cosy, and unless you’ve spilt something in bed or sweated through the night, you can usually wear them two to three times before needing to wash them.
