The South African coffee industry is experiencing rapid growth, with Ready-To-Drink (RTD) coffee emerging as a major driver. As consumers increasingly prioritise convenience and variety, RTD coffee has established itself as a key player in the evolving coffee landscape.

Industry insights reveal that the South African coffee market is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.6% from 2023 to 2027, with RTD coffee playing a significant role in this expansion. The Coffee Association of South Africa notes that 75% of local coffee consumers prioritise convenience when purchasing coffee, a trend fuelled by increasingly busy lifestyles and the demand for on-the-go solutions.

This has contributed to the rise of RTD Iced Coffee products, which offer high-quality coffee in a quick, accessible format without compromising on flavour, taste or experience.

The rise of ready-to-drink (RTD) coffee reflects a growing consumer preference for convenience and on-the-go options. As people lead increasingly busy lives, they are looking for quick and satisfying energy boosts without compromising on quality. RTD coffee has emerged as an ideal alternative to traditional energy drinks, offering a convenient, refreshing solution for those who need a pick-me-up throughout the day.

"Today’s consumers aren’t just looking for coffee—they want a personalised experience that fits seamlessly into their lifestyle," says Mbulelo Mashilo, Brand Manager for Douwe Egberts. "The rising demand for RTD coffee mirrors this shift, and we are ahead of the curve with our two new variants, Cappuccino Break and Mocha Latte Break, catering to the diverse needs of the modern consumer."

The RTD coffee trend is expected to continue, reshaping the South African coffee market, as brands focus on offering a range of convenient, premium, and sustainable options that cater for the needs of the modern consumer.
