Being on the Pill makes women broody

It is the contraceptive of choice for millions of women who are not ready to be mothers.

So it is a little ironic that going on the Pill makes them broody.

A study has found that women on the Pill find babies cuter - with button noses, puppy dog eyes and chubby cheeks all tugging their heart strings harder than those of women not taking an oral contraceptive.

Researchers say increased levels of oestrogen and progesterone caused by the contraceptive strengthen a woman's natural desire to form a bond with children.

The findings add to previous evidence that the Pill can alter your judgement - with a separate study concluding that it puts women off masculine men and makes them more attracted to those with boyish features such as Johnny Depp.

Scientists at the University of St Andrews, Scotland, arrived at the latest results by comparing the reaction to a series of babies' faces in men, women and women on the Pill.

They first showed more than 100 men and women of different ages two computer images of infants.

In each case, one of the pictures had been pre-judged as slightly "cuter".

The women were better than the men at picking out the sweeter infant.

And those who had yet to go through the menopause were better at it than older women, suggesting a link to sex hormones.

The scientists then compared the reactions of a group of women on the Pill with another group of women.

Those on the Pill were found to be the best at homing in on cuteness, according to the study in the journal Psychological Science.

Researcher Reiner Sprengelmeyer believes that the female sex hormones oestrogen and progesterone increase a woman's sensitivity to baby faces.

Taking the Pill artificially raises levels of the hormones, making the female brain even more enamoured with what it sees.

It is thought that seeing cuteness - even when it is not there - is one of nature's ways of helping mothers bond with their babies.

Sprengelmeyer said: "Although caring for a baby involves an investment of time and resources, it is rewarding to be with cute babies.

"They are rated as more friendly, cheerful and likeable and a female's willingness to adopt a baby and a mother's sensitivity towards the baby depend on (her perception of) its cuteness."

Another explanation for the brooding of women on the Pill is that they are more likely to be in a relationship and so more emotionally equipped for motherhood.

But the oral contraceptive has also been shown to affect a woman's mind in other ways.

Previous research found that it made women find boyish men more attractive.

This could explain the shift in tastes from macho 1960s film stars such as Sean Connery and Kirk Douglas to the more wimpy stars of today such as Leonardo Di Caprio and Depp. - Daily Mail
