On the eve of his 49th birthday, Barry Levin (the new "kid" on the block) opens his one-man show A Barrytone Experience at the Wits Downstairs Theatre for a brief run from today to Wednesday, December 6.

Ann Hamblin of Jacques Brel fame directs and Michael Watt, who is currently working towards his Masters in solo piano performance (Wits), provides the musical accompaniment.

A Barrytone Experience is Levin's personal musical journey through his life: his childhood, then the army, and then the corporate environment.

It incorporates song, dialogue and dance spiced with a dash of nostalgia.

About 22 songs from Broadway and West End musicals are included: Joseph, Fiddler on the Roof, 42nd Street, Les Miserables, Chess, Dreamgirls, Porgy and Bess and Sunset Boulevard.

"Basically, it is my story of how I became fascinated with musicals and singing from an early age.

"As the story unfolds, one is taken on a journey of my life, growing up in Bloemfontein and beyond, with many interesting, humorous and thought-provoking experiences and anecdotes," says the young-at-heart Levin.

A Barrytone Experience runs at the Wits Downstairs Theatre from today, with performances from Thursday to Saturday at 8pm, and Sunday at 6pm.
