It's a race for the million as Survivor SA finale nears

It has been three months since Survivor SA hit our small screens, and this Sunday sees the show drawing to a close in a grand finale.

South Africa's take on the popular American reality series has received mixed reactions, but the consensus seems to be that the local competition hasn't matched its international counterpart.

The contestants were on the whole too nice to generate any furore; the challenges weren't very demanding or technically impressive; and while presenter Mark Bayly improved as the show wore on, he lacked the relaxed style of the American Survivor host, Jeff Probst.

Nevertheless, the producers remain optimistic that the final episode of Survivor SA will draw in the viewers as Vanessa Marawa, Mzi Tyhokolo, Jacinda Louw and Zayn Nabbi battle it out for the top spot.

That these four have survived as long as they have is a great feat, but who has really been the best player and deserves to walk away with the million?

We are pinning our hopes on Survivor's resident fisherman, Mzi.

From day one, the energy adviser took on the role of provider, and proved to be the quintessential diplomat.

Here was a man who could talk himself out of almost any situation (at times in someone else's mother tongue) and put out the fires flaring up between some of the other players, while still managing to come out as the good guy.

But don't be fooled into thinking that Mzi isn't aware of his power.

"When you're in an environment like Survivor you have to question why people are open to you," he told The Star.

"In the case of Brigitte, for example, Nico said she was playing me like a pack of cards … But when it came to voting Danielle out, she could have at least got a split vote against Nico, but because she bonded with me, I basically got her to vote against her will."

So confident is Mzi that, when asked who he thinks is worthy of winning the million, he said: "If we talk about who deserves to win by virtue of how you play the game, pick me."

As for the competition, Mzi says Jacinda is "scheming, intelligent and calculating", while he dismisses Zayn as "gullible, naive and maybe a little short-sighted".

Does he consider Vanessa to be his main challenge for the title?

"Not necessarily, but if it has to go to someone else, Vanessa could win," said Mzi.

"She has really blossomed and shown her strength while living in those conditions."
