Durban is set to welcome international hip-hop heavyweight Rick Ross as the headline act for the Durban Music Fest on May 3 at Hollywoodbets Kings Park Stadium.
The announcement has sparked excitement among local music fans, as major international artists often choose Cape Town or Johannesburg over Durban.
The festival boasts a diverse lineup of South African talent, including Maskandi star Khuzani, hip-hop artist Nasty C, and rapper Big Zulu. The festival is organised by Blue Screen Entertainment in partnership with the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture.
Other performers include DJ Tira, Blxckie, Dlala Thukzin, Mawhoo, Ugatsheni, Dladla Mshunqisi, Gold Max, Ntencane, Mzukulu, DJ Bongz, DJ Sox, and Intro Fam.
To uplift local artists, the festival is offering one emerging musician the chance to perform on the main stage through an exclusive giveaway.
Tickets and VIP packages go on sale on Friday on the Computicket. Organisers urge fans to secure their spots early for what is expected to be a historic event.
Rick Ross, born William Leonard Roberts II, is known for his signature deep voice and dominance in the global hip-hop scene.
He last visited South Africa in January, when he vacationed in Cape Town and linked up with local rapper Usimamane.
During his trip, he shared his admiration for the country’s beauty, particularly after experiencing whale watching along the coast.
Announcing his return to South Africa, Ross shared his enthusiasm in a video message:
"What's up, South Africa? It's the biggest boss in the game, Ricky Rosé. I'm excited about coming back to South Africa to perform live, May 3rd, Kings Park Stadium in Durban, for the Durban Music Fest, you feel me? We're bridging the gap between the U.S. music culture and the incredible sounds of South African music. We're celebrating our cultures, our rhythms, and our love for music, the passion of the hustle."
