Tributes are pouring in for former Lotus FM presenter and author, Mala Lutchmanan, who passed away on Wednesday, December 18.
The 64-year-old doyenne of Tamil culture, retired from the station in June after 28 years.
The Yellowwood Park resident was popular for her show, “Isai – Mazhai”, which translates to “A shower of sweet music”, on Fridays from 6pm to 7pm.
The announcement of her death was made via Facebook, where Lotus FM expressed its sadness.
“Today we bid farewell to a lady who touched all our hearts. The Lotus FM family is deeply saddened by the passing of our beloved colleague, Mala Lutchman.
“With over 25 years of dedicated service, Mala was an integral part of our team and played a pivotal role in shaping our religious and language programs.”
The post continued: “Her vast knowledge of language, culture, and religion had a profound impact on our communities, and her contributions will be deeply missed. Mala's literary works, particularly her book on Mandela's quotes translated into Tamil, will remain a testament to her passion and commitment to preserving our cultural heritage.
“We remember Mala as a stalwart of Lotus FM, whose tireless efforts and dedication earned her numerous accolades during her visits to India.
“Our heartfelt condolences go out to Mala's family, friends, and loved ones. May they find solace in the knowledge that her legacy will continue to inspire and uplift our communities. Rest in peace, dear Mala. Your memory will be cherished forever. 🕊️🙏🏼♥️”
Kamani Moodley of the Multicultural Academy Of South Africa wrote on Facebook, “Devastating news of Mala Lutchmanan Akka’s demise. Words cannot express how sad we are to lose a legend who contributed her volumes of work in promoting the Tamil language and also bringing knowledge of rituals etc.
“She was passionate and dedicated in all her presentations on air and live broadcasts. Always made me so comfortable during our interviews on radio Always phoned and encourage motivated and was so proud of all Masa achievements. May her soul RIP.”
Renowned Mzansi actress, Jailoshini Naidoo commented: “So devastating to hear this. Rest in peace dearest Mala. You will always be remembered with so much love. Sincere condolences to the family 🙏🏽💔.”
Seasoned Lotus FM presenter, Shaastra Nagesar, wrote: “😢 Aunty Mala was such an incredible woman. Generous with her time, kind with her words and loving in her ways. Rest well. You will be missed 💐.“
Lutchmanan's funeral service is set to take place at the Clare Estate Crematorium on Thurdsday, December 19, from 1pm to 2.30pm, providing an opportunity for family, friends, and fans to pay their final respects to this stalwart of Tamil culture and an irreplaceable figure in the South African media landscape.
