Kwaito legend Doc Shebeleza, real name Victor Bogopane, has passed away at the age of 51.
This comes after the nation is still reeling from the loss of Winnie Khumalo, who was also 51, earlier this week.
“Times Live” reported that a family member confirmed that the “Ebumnandini” hitmaker passed away on the morning of Thursday, January 9.
Shebeleza was hospitalised last year following a health scare. He was scheduled for surgery this coming February.
Some people in the entertainment industry, including Phil Mphela and local rapper L’tido have commented on his passing.
“RIP Doc Shebeleza. He was a real Grootman. In 2014 I sampled ‘Gets Getsa’ for my song ‘Steve Kekana’. He cleared the sample for me, without taking a percentage or charging me. That’s unheard off in the music industry! Condolences to his family,” wrote L’tido.
Fans also expressed their sadness about Shebeleza’s passing.
“Kwaito icon and music legend Doc Shelebeza has left us far too soon. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his loved ones, fans, and the entire music community. May his legacy live on through his music,” said @TvblogbyMLU.
Rise Mzansi also sent their condolences to the Bogopane family.
“Rise Mzansi extends condolences to the family, friends, and fans of Victor Bogopane, famously known as #DocShebeleza. A pioneer of the kwaito genre, Doc Shebeleza's hits like ‘Ghets Ghetsa’, ‘S’kumfete’, and ‘Ebumnandini’ made a lasting impact.
“His bold voice and influence on South African music will never be forgotten. As we mourn, we celebrate his legacy. His dedication to music and community continues to inspire. Rest in peace, legend.”
Independent Media Lifestyle reached out to Shebeleza’s manager, Shakes Mavundla, but was unable to get a hold of him for a comment.
