Durban — The newly appointed Harry Gwala District municipal manager Gamakulu Sineke has promised to prioritise water and sanitation delivery in the district.
He stressed the importance of working with local municipalities in delivering water to all wards.
Sineke, who was a municipal manager at iXopo’s Ubuhlebezwe Municipality, was welcomed to the office at the beginning of this month.
He spoke about the prioritisation of service delivery and told municipal workers how to conduct themselves during his official meeting with staff members this week.
“As the district, our mandate is water and sanitation, which can be done in partnership with our local municipality. We all need to work together in delivering water. We need to check with wards if indeed they are getting water. What I am here to say is let us work together, that way we can achieve more,” said Sineke.
He told the Harry Gwala municipal employees that they should refrain from wrongdoing in the workplace. Referring to the Municipal Systems Amendment Act he said political activism must conducted after working hours.
Sineke advised those who may be affected by the amendment to adhere to the call and choose between being an employee or remain in political office.
In August, Harry Gwala mayor Zamo Nxumalo conducted a site visit and monitored the progress of the sewer rectification project at Ixopo and the water supply project at Ubuhlebezwe Municipality.
Nxumalo said: “Our job as the municipality is simple, we are here to make sure that we provide water to the public. Yes, water is a complex issue and difficult to deal with at times but ours is to work hard and make sure that the people in the district get clean drinkable water. We need to be committed and apply proper planning so that these projects are completed in a record time.”
Among the inspected places were: Ncukubane Water Supply Scheme, Summerfield Water Supply Scheme, KwaMeyi Teekloof Water Supply and the Ibisi Sewer Project – all located in the Ubuhlebezwe and Umzimkhulu local municipalities.
