Durban – Former ANC treasurer-general and presidential hopeful Dr Zweli Mkhize has assured the public that the State Capture recommendations would continue to be implemented under his presidency.
In a sit-down interview with the SABC on Wednesday afternoon, Mkhize told the viewers that he fully supports the commission and it would not be thrown to the bin if he gets elected at the upcoming ANC conference and becomes the country’s president.
Mkhize warned that the report has a lot of flaws and there was a feeling that it went beyond its terms of reference and got it into areas where it was not supposed to have gone to. The former health minister added that there was no one in the ANC who never supported the commission as the party started discussing it before the 2017 Nasrec conference.
“I support the commission and it will have to continue to do its work so those people that were found to have committed crime should not be prosecuted and the recommendations should be implemented. As much I support the commission but it should be noted it has flaws which must also be corrected,” said Mkhize.
He further said the commission would remain relevant in the future because the state capture may be continuing even now. The former KwaZulu-Natal chairperson and premier reiterated that he would ensure the implementation of the party policies which he said has been the downfall of the party for many years. He added that everyone agrees that the ANC has good policies but lacked the implementation plan.
Up until now, it is Mkhize who is expected to fiercely contest president Cyril Ramaphosa for party highest office. Both leaders are said to have received more branch nominations than Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and Lindiwe Sisulu who have also raised their hands for party president’s position.
