Durban - A 40-year-old Durban resident is recovering in hospital from a gunshot wound to his face following an attempted hijacking.
The two men involved are due to appear in court on Thursday.
The man was shot in an attempted hijacking on Bally Road, Isipingo, south of Durban, on Wednesday.
Durban metro police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Parboo Sewpersad said members were at the Isipingo base when they heard three gunshots that came from close proximity to them.
“The members proceeded immediately to determine where the gunshots had come from. As they drove along Bally Road, they found a man lying on the ground bleeding from the mouth.”
Sewpersad said it was established that he had been the victim of a hijacking attempt. Two men tried to take his gold Toyota Corolla at gunpoint.
The man was rushed to Kingsway Hospital by nearby business owners.
“The man described the two suspects and members proceeded to sweep the area on Phila Ndwandwe Road near the canal. Two men fitting the description were spotted running through the canal,” he explained.
Police gave chase on foot, pursuing the suspects into the canal on Wilcox Road.
Sewpersad said the police did not give up.
A proper search of the area was conducted and the two suspects were found hiding in the long grass.
“Both suspects were arrested and taken back to the crime scene, where CCTV footage confirmed it was them.”
Sewpersad said police had linked the men to other cases.
But the incident did not end there.
Sewpersad said the SAPS K9 and Search and Rescue were called to search for the firearms that had been thrown into the canal during the chase.
The search was not successful.
