Durban — A man who allegedly sold drugs to pupils and the community in Verulam was sentenced to six months after pleading guilty to his crime.

Last Thursday, the Verulam Magistrate’s Court sentenced Issa Robin, 29, for dealing in drugs.

KwaZulu-Natal Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Sibu Ncane said that on October 10 last year, Hawks members from Port Shepstone Serious Organised Crime Investigation acted on intelligence, regarding an alleged drug dealer who was selling narcotics to school pupils and members of the surrounding community in Verulam.

Ncane said officers conducted an intelligence-driven operation, leading to Robin’s arrest, who was found in possession of a quantity of drugs with an estimated street value of R14 820.

He said Robin was arrested and charged with dealing drugs.

“He appeared in court several times until he pleaded guilty and was sentenced on Thursday, September 12,” Ncane said.

“The accused was sentenced to six months’ direct imprisonment, of which two months is suspended for five years.”

Meanwhile, an alleged drug dealer is expected to appear in court on Monday (today) following his arrest by Hawks officers from Pietermaritzburg Serious Organised Crime Investigation and Umgungundlovu Crime Intelligence on Friday.

KZN Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Simphiwe Mhlongo said officers received information about the suspect, 34, who was dealing in drugs in the Pietermaritzburg central business district.

He said a person fitting the said description was spotted during surveillance. The suspect was approached and searched.

“During the search, two jaws of cocaine to the street value of approximately R4 000 were found in his pocket,” Mhlongo said.

The suspect was arrested and charged for dealing in drugs, Mhlongo said.

“He is expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, September 16.”
