Cape Town - The best of youth cricket will be on full display in Cape Town next week.
Between December 17 and 20, community endowment charity Awqaf SA, in association with Primrose Cricket Club and Western Province Cricket Association, will be hosting the first-ever South African Youth Hundred Cricket Tournament.
Held under the patronage of cricketing legends such as Beresford Williams, Nabeal Dien and Proteas cricketer JP Duminy, 12 teams from various community clubs in the under-16 and under-18 age group categories will be playing a 100-ball game.
The youth cricket tournament has been running since 2015 as a T20 event and has become the largest exhibition of youth cricket of its kind in South Africa.
The 2020 tournament had to be cancelled due to Covid-19, but after thorough consultation with stakeholders and health officials, event organisers were able to adopt a new format to accommodate the sporting regulations amid health concerns.
A smaller tournament will take place and will see the following clubs participating: Blue Bells CC, Durbanville CC, Fish Hoek CC, Mitchells Plain CC, Ottoman CC, Primroses CC, Rylands CC, Solomon Makhosana CC, Stellenbosch CC and Sunningdale CC.
“This youth cricket tournament had become a popular fixture for clubs, but the pandemic disrupted the sport and had adverse effects on the mental health and well-being of our young sportsmen,” said Awqaf SA deputy CEO Mickaeel Collier.
“We wanted to give our children an opportunity to play cricket again, and are grateful to our cricket administrators, health authorities, sponsors and supporters for rallying behind this event, to make it possible.”
Collier said that it was an honour for Awqaf SA to support this sporting event, which has become a powerful vehicle for youth development.

“We have launched a new website for this tournament where all our games will be streamed live.
“All fixtures, player profiles and match scores can be accessed from this site as well. We encourage the public who cannot make it to the field, to tune in and support their teams,” Collier added.
