Cape Town - Independent research institution, TRENDS Research & Advisory, brought its Global Round Table Series to Cape Town, with a high-level delegation exploring the impact and influence of think tanks on public policy and governance, with a particular focus on the Middle East and Africa.

The programme took place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) yesterday with media partner Aletihad News Centre.

The research tour scheduled for July 15-20 started with the official opening of the TRENDS Research & Advisory office in Cape Town on Monday.

The milestone occasion saw representatives from several think tanks in Middle Eastern and African countries in attendance.

A newly-opened Cape Town office will support the headquarters in Abu Dhabi with research, studies and insights, and forms part of an international expansion and commitment to issues affecting the African continent.

Part of the Trends Strategic partnership team in the global sector, Fatmah Alyammahi said: “Today, we are opening the global round table series Middle East and Africa and this series is dedicated to unlocking the potential of think tanks, new ideas, and innovative strategies for impactful engagement, aiming to foster collaboration and drive meaning change across our regions.”

The round table series consisted of three interactive panel discussions.

The event provided an opportunity for various think tanks from across the globe, to share ideas on topics related to security issues, economics, and politics.

King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies chairperson, His Royal Highness Turki Al Faisal Al Saud, delivered a keynote address via video during the opening session.

He said: “This move, to open a branch in this historic town that is marked by the memory and the spirit of its legend, the late Nelson Mandela is fully appreciated. Such a memory and a spirit, far exceed the borders of South Africa to the whole world.

“Therefore, the search for justice is the legacy of this great leader.

“South Africa stands for justice for Palestine and its people throughout the history of this protracted conflict is a model for all countries that seek justice in our world.”

Mandela Legacy Foundation chairperson Zondwa Mandela’s in-person keynote address followed.

“It is very important that we commend all of the think tanks, the research institutions that are playing a critical role in formulating policy recommendations.

“From engaging with government and agencies, the private sector, and civil society, to advocating for policies that promote job creation, skills development and entrepreneurship among the youth. Your collective evidence and base recommendations have helped shape national strategies and programs aimed at reducing unemployment.”

He added: “As we move forward, let us continue to support and collaborate with these vital institutions of knowledge.

“Together we can create a world that is prosperous and inclusive for all its citizens.”
