Johannesburg - White maize in South Africa, the continent’s biggest producer of the grain, climbed to the highest level in more than four months as it gained for a second day in Johannesburg.
White maize for delivery in December rose 1.2 percent to 1,909 rand a metric ton by the close on the South African Futures Exchange, the highest since for a most-active contract since May 20.
Yellow maize for delivery the same month increased 0.5 percent to 1,928 rand a ton, the highest since August 6.
The Free State province, which produces more than 40 percent of the nation’s maize, has had low rainfall in the last few weeks and no rain is forecast for at least the next seven days, according to the South African Weather Service.
South Africa uses white maize to make a staple food known locally as pap, while the yellow type is mainly fed to animals.
Wheat for delivery in December was unchanged today at 3,650 rand a ton by the close. - Bloomberg News
