Johannesburg - Yellow and white maize in South Africa rose for a second straight session by the midday close in Johannesburg.
Wheat also increased.
Yellow maize for delivery in December rose 1.5 percent to 1,845 rand a metric ton, the biggest advance for the most-active contract since June 27, on the South African Futures Exchange.
The white variety for delivery in the same month gained 1.2 percent to 1,758 rand a ton.
South Africa is the biggest producer of maize on the continent.
Meal from white maize is used to make a staple food known as pap.
The yellow variety is used for animal feed.
